Late Afternoon Feast at this little gem; famous in Hong Kong for it's Peking Duck and Roast Spring Chicken
Ha Ha, don't be fooled by the name; no, this is not American cuisine, this is Northern Chinese cuisine at it's best, at the American Restaurant in Wanchai. No need for frills or fuss, this little gem which has been in business since the 1940's is practically a Hong Kong Institution. Hard to believe that my dear Mother was deprived of this place; her only memories are of her parents and siblings enjoying regular visits and hearing them talk about how delicious the food was there. So many decades later, her daughter enjoyed a relaxing afternoon this Saturday, with her, enthusing over the menu and having trouble deciding what to order.
Safe to say, we'll be back with Dad and with friends for upcoming gatherings, to savour the homely and very tasty dishes that their extensive menu has to offer; including their signature Roast Spring Chicken 童子雞, which mum ordered yesterday. Succulent and tender chicken roasted to perfection with that beautiful crispy skin, served with seasoned salt and special soy sauce. Finger-licking good.
We ordered a simple but very satisfying dish of garlic fried bok choy白菜 (accompanied by fluffy white rice).
Well, there's always room for dessert, as they say, and this time was no different. Mum and I were determined to reserve space for the scrumptious and mouthwatering banana fritters, my favourite.
Check out this video to see how these are served :)
