A Truly British Tradition - Fish N Chips

Hi there again Fragrant Harbour Foodies! Thought it was about time to take a look at a truly British culinary tradition; yep, good old Fish N Chips. Wow! Did you know, that Fish and Chips date back to the 1860's in England?

In Hong Kong, we should consider ourselves lucky to have an array of eateries and restaurants, that, really hit the spot, when it comes to this very well known delight.

I will feature and compare 3 different Fish N Chip dinners from my Mum's very own private home kitchen and then 2 others: one from an extremely popular place in the IFC (and one of my favourite places to eat) and the other, a Member's Only Club Cafe. You may have guessed, that I am referring to Open Kitchen and Boundary Cafe at the Kowloon Cricket Club.

First up, my private Masterchef, Mum's delicious home-cooked version

Beer battered fillet (lovely light and crispy) served with golden brown crinkle chips and fresh garden peas, accompanied by traditional Haywards pickled onions (a must in my book) and Waitrose Dill gherkins (optional) and finished off with 2 slices of lemon. Mum delivers every single time :)

Next, we have Open Kitchen's lovely plate of Fish and Chips heaven

Two pieces of orange battered Ling fillets (nice and crispy batter) with farm chips and citrus coleslaw (lovely and zingy)

Finally a look at KCC's version of this great comfort food

Hmm, the chips, although seasoned with salt are not quite the golden brown they should be and the fillets of fish are lacking in the golden crispy batter (a little too thick and doughy in consistency) however, nice touch with the mushy peas!
